How app referral bonuses work in India (and why some never arrive)
Published 3 Nov 2026
Most popular apps in India — from UPI wallets to stock brokers — pay new users a small reward for joining through a referral link. Here’s how these programmes usually work.
1. The link or code tags you as referred
When you install through a referral link or enter a referral code, the app records who referred you. Install from a different link afterwards and the referral is usually lost.
2. You must complete a qualifying action
Signing up alone rarely earns the reward. Typical qualifying actions:
- Completing KYC
- Making a first UPI payment above a minimum amount
- Opening and funding a demat account
3. The reward is credited
Rewards usually arrive within a few days as cashback, scratch cards, coins or account credit.
Common reasons bonuses don’t arrive
- You already had an account on the same phone number or device.
- The qualifying action wasn’t completed within the offer window.
- The offer changed — always check the terms inside the app.
